Abstract : This research sought to reexamine the topography of Jeju Province as a candidate World Natural
Heritage from the tourism geographical viewpoint and to present a futuristic and systematic management scheme.
The tourism topography of Jeju Province can be classified into 5 types: mountainous topography, river
topography, cave topography, coastal topography, and island topography. Most of these topographic features have
been formed by lava flow following a volcanic eruption, developing their own unique features through secondary
topographic actions such as weathering, erosion, movement, and sedimentation. From the regional viewpoint, the
tourism topography of Jeju Province is mainly divided into 3 areas: Northwest region, Southwest region, and
Northeast region. Note, however, that they are located 1~1.5 hours away from all directions, thereby enabling
tourists to enjoy topographic tourism sans time and space limitations. Currently, except a few certain topographic
views, there are neither special explanation signs installed nor information books published, however. To enable
Jeju Province to be designated and managed as a World Natural Heritage, more specific and careful preparations
are required. In this connection, a guidebook tentatively titled “Topography of Jeju Province” needs to be
published first.
