Abstract : Southeast Asia has an area of 4,400,000 square kilometers, one tenth of the Asian continent. Due to its
geographic location and complex topography, Southeast Asia has been a region to which people move and settle
down their lives. This has resulted in complicated distribution of population. The presence of so many nations in Southeast Asia causes language complexity in the region as well. In 2009, the gross domestic product (GDP) of Singapore was valued at $177 billion, ranking 43 among other Southeast Asian countries. Singapore is a wealthy country with a per capita GDP of over $37,000. In addition, the national competition of Malaysia ranked 10th in the world in 2010 according to the announcement of the Business Development of Switzerland.
Along with its rich resources and potential, Malaysia’s high-quality education is considered as another factor to maintain powerful national competition. English immersion education has also been a crucial factor to the economic development of Singapore and Malaysia.
This study is to research the communication-based education of English that breaks away from the traditional teaching methods such as conducted in Finland, Singapore, malaysia and Japan. In addition, this study proposes some alternatives for English immersion education suitable for Korean by analyzing various issues of English immersion education which was found in those countries.

요 약 : 동남아시아는 면적 440만km2로 아시아 대륙의 1/10에 이르는 지역이다. 지리적 위치와 복잡한 지형 때문에 예로부터 인류의 이동·정착의 무대가 되어, 복잡한 민족이 분포한다. 동남아시아 인구의 분포와 밀도는 지역적으로 극히 불균등하고 이러한 복잡한 민족분포는 그대로 언어의 복잡성으로 나타난다. 동남아시아 국가 중 싱가포르는 2009년 기준으로 국내총생산(GDP)은 1770억$로 43위의 해당하는 경제규모이며, 1인당 GDP는 37000$가 넘는 부유한 국가이다. 또한 말레이시아 국가 경쟁력은 2010년 스위스 경영개발원(IMD)의 발표에 따르면 세계 10위로 한국보다 13단계나 높다. 이런 배경에는 풍부한 자원과 잠재력과 함께 높은 수준의 교육이 그 원인으로 꼽히고 있다. 싱가포르나 말레이시아의 국가 경제 발전의 성공적인 또 다른 이유로 바로 영어 몰입교육의 성공에 있다고 해도 지나치지 않다. 영어 활용 능력은 개인뿐만 아니라 한 국가의 경쟁력에도 큰 영향을 미친다.
전통적인 교수 학습방법에서 탈피하여 의사소통 중심의 학습을 실시한 핀란드, 싱가포르, 말레이시아. 일본 등의 성공사례를 조사하고 또한 각 나라에서 영어 몰입 교육 실시에 따른 제반 문제점들을 분석하여 한국형 영어 몰입교육의 방안을 제시하고자 한다.
